First woodcock experience went awesome! Good dog work, crazy flushes, full bag!

@tf30 I hate that you didn't win any of the books, I was pulling for. I appreciate you posting every week. If you'd like, I can send you a Gundog Central t-shirt, you'll just need to give me a size.
@gundogchat got them in Texas, just wondering why it took me so long to do this! It's so much fun.

@tf30 What State did you get to hunt in?
Curious if the people on here have a preferred gauge?
PersonalIy I do 90% of my shooting with a 20, but have a 12 and 16 (heirloom) for certain applications.
Always like to hear preferences!

@Matt Williams it’s a yildiz spz me special. The problem I have with it, is I’m used to shooting a sxs and it’s an o/u. I can’t seem to get my sight picture correct.
@finandfeatherguideservice Happy New Year to you!
@fowlerb14 410 on quail is fun! Curious what 28 you have?
@johnl killer duo!
.410 for quail, 20 for most anything else. I have a newer 28 but I can’t seem to get used to it.
16 & 28
Quail hunting is number one!!!
happy new year!!

@tf30 Same, I mostly shoot my 20 gauge. Rarely do I ever pick up my 12.
I was fortunate enough to get my lab's last retrieve on video. She was a good dog!

A fun time in Illinois getting some good dog work and shooting in.

@gundogcentral we had a good amount of flushes, probably 50 total, 20 in gun "range", 7 roosters.
Shooting skills were lacking so no birds in the bag.
Had the fortune of hunting with someone who'd drawn the permit for Sibley!

@tf30 Curious how you did on pheasant. Looks like you got some water fowling in too.
Gearing up for an Illinois trip to see an old buddy and chase some pheasants?
Anyone ever bird hunted in that state?
Looking forward to the windshield time and catching up with old friends, lucky to cross another state off the list.

That's just north of me, been looking at places to go but haven't committed to anything yet.
Early morning wigeon retrieves. CBRs can cut a pretty good wake.

Thanksgiving weekend is a duck weekend for me--hoping this cold front pushed down some birds into North Texas--first year without the lab, but a new up and coming CBR for the family, "Lewis" with his person...Clark.
Best Dad joke I've had so far

@tf30 I sure do love the looks of a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Interested to see how they compare to a lab.
Asked about woodcock last week, so this week figured I would reach out for a little more distant bird.
Looking for advice or direction with like Wisconsin/Michigan ruffed grouse?
Any connections in or familiar with that part of the world and quarry? It's been romanticized so much through pictures and writings, figured I need to give it a whirl.

I'm right there with you, haven't had a chance to make it up to Wisconsin to hunt Grouse, but definitely a high on my list.
Trying to learn woodcock--anyone down south have any broad sweeping nuggets of advice they're willing to share? I'll be hunting in Texas but figure those along gulf coast states will have some overlapping input.

@jeffdavis well I'll share anything I'm able to uncover. I read about the Northwoods stuff, but the habitats are so different, it's been tough to translate into pineywoods cover

I wish I did. I'm in west Tennessee, we have some woodcock migrate over in East Tennessee and I've heard of people hunting them in Arkansas, but I've never seen or heard of anyone hunting them here. I've been trying to find out more myself.
Lots of years ago fresh out of college guiding on a cool day in South Texas.

2009, that’s was lots of years ago! Looks like a great time!
Piper and Jack--great upland duo. Both chasing birds in fields without limits anymore. #LabradorRetriever #gsp #quailhunting

Looks like a lot of fun!
The book giveaway drew me here, but will be interested to see how this forum evolves.

@gundogchat glad to saddle up for the ride. I don't do FB so happy to directly engage with the birddog community!

Welcome to Gun Dog Chat Matt, thanks for posting. The site is a work in progress and updating almost daily.
