I am putting a deposit down for a German shorthair pup. My daughter and I want to train pup together. She is 14 and wants to start hunting with me. I have quite a bit of experience training labs for retrieving but this will be my first pointing/versatile dog to train. We are joining a Navda chapter and the breeder of our pup is a young women who is very excited to help my daughter and I out. With that be said is there any advice some of you fellow bird hunters/ dog trainers can give a dad who wants to bond with his daughter in the outdoors?

@gundogcentral I think that is about as good of advice as someone could give.

Ransom Eaton - @ransomeaton

@mattwilliams I’m sure they will want to hunt with you. I have always asked my daughter to go hunting but never pushed it on her. She approached me this year about wanting to go hunting. So needless to say I am over the moon excited. I have a son who has hunted with me since he was 6 he is 18 now and in college but is an avid outdoorsman.

Gundog Central - @gundogcentral

@ransom I can't offer much advice, just keep it fun and enjoy the time you get together.

Matt Williams - @mattwilliams

that's a good question--I'm 13 years behind you so maybe will pick up a nugget
just pray my kids WANT to hunt with me as they get older!

Asked about woodcock last week, so this week figured I would reach out for a little more distant bird.

Looking for advice or direction with like Wisconsin/Michigan ruffed grouse?
Any connections in or familiar with that part of the world and quarry? It's been romanticized so much through pictures and writings, figured I need to give it a whirl.

I'm right there with you, haven't had a chance to make it up to Wisconsin to hunt Grouse, but definitely a high on my list.

There is just something about the look in my dogs' eyes when she comes in for water when we are hunting. :-)

I’m officially taking orders for 2024 CALENDARS and I’m delighted to announce that I will be offering TWO versions this year…

The first will be similar to last year, with an assortment of my art including birds, trout, dogs, wildlife, horse (cover) ect.

The second will feature ALL sporting dogs - Pointers, Shorthairs, Boykins, Brittanys, Labs, Vizslas, and of course Setters!

I’m also ecstatic to be using a new vendor, so the artwork will printed on 130# signature paper - one of the thickest weights available. This ensures a high quality, durable product with a luxurious feel and soft texture finish. It is an acid free, archival and Forest Stewardship Council certified paper. (The distinction is obvious - I polled 10 individuals and 100% chose this sample out of the ones I presented to them)

The best news is that while the quality has gone up, the price has not! In fact, someone just purchased 10 of them 🤗

2024 Calendars are $25 each - with FREE shipping for orders of (4) or more!

Please let me know if you’d like any for yourself (or as gifts) and thank you for your support!

With daylights saving time now in effect, it feels like we have a lot more time to spend trapped in the house. As today dragged on, we used our extra hour to do an adhoc mini Thanksgiving dinner to two. We made this deep fried, Cajun injected split pheasant, homemade sage stuffing, cranberries relish with orange zest and some smoked maple bourbon sweet potatoes with bacon. Tami Lynn Davis

Outwitting Pheasant by Edgar Castillo is the featured article on Gundog Central this week. You read Edgar's article using this link : https://gundogcentral.com/articles/5306/outwitting-pheasants

About Edgar. Edgar Castillo is a recently retired law enforcement officer for a large Kansas City metropolitan agency. He also served in the United States Marine Corps.

Born in Guatemala, hunting was a new concept when Edgar came to the U.S. His passion lies in the uplands as he travels across public lands throughout Kansas or wherever the dirt road takes him…to hunt open fields, walk treelines, & bust through plum thickets in search of wild birds in wild places.

This fervid emotion for the uplands has since blossomed into a SIGNIFICANT social media presence. It has allowed Edgar to share his experiences and connect with other bird hunters through writing.

Winner, Winner! Congratulations to Mel Lueck @mellueck on winning this week's Gun Dog Chat Gun Dog book giveaway. She's won a copy of Idaho Upland Days - Reflections on Bird Dogs, Banner Days and Other Roadside Revelations by Andrew M. Wayment, sure to be a great read. This is book  #5 of my 13 week book giveaway. There were only 4 eligible post made this week, making everyone's chance of winning pretty dang good.

Don't miss your chance to win book  #6 . How do you enter? It's pretty simple, just create a post on Gun Dog Chat ( https://gundogchat.com ). At the end of the week I'll have a random drawing to select the winner. Instead of selecting a random book this week, this weeks book will be a Limited Edition Handbook copy of Mouthful of Feathers (https://www.reidbryant.com) with an illustration by Frederick Stivers (https://frederickstivers.com).
